Helichrysum Essential Oil For Skin, Joints, and More
Helichrysum (Helichrysum italicum) essential oil has been used in herbal health practices since ancient times in Greece. It is best known for its skin care benefits. However, helichrysum essential oil boasts many different health benefits due to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antifungal, and antibacterial properties. Other uses include:
- Muscle and joint pain
- Inflammation in blood vessels (thus, lowering blood pressure)
- Candida growth
- Inflammation in the gut lining and intestines
- Swelling of hemorrhoids
- Liver disease
Helichrysum essential oil does not display significant levels of allergic reactions or side effects. As a result, it’s believed to be well-tolerated, and mild side effects have occurred only in rare cases (where people experienced an allergic reaction). With that being said, Helichrysum oil should still be diluted with a carrier oil before applying to skin. In addition, it adversely interacts with thyme and various drugs, including several blood clotting medications. Be sure to check with your health care practitioner before starting any aromatherapy regimen.
This essential oil blends well with Tea Tree, Myrrh, Frankincense, and Lavender essential oils.
Helichrysum essential oil is rich in esters, which can be calming, relaxing, and have balancing effects on mood. In addition, research has shown that application of ester-rich essential oils reduces the appearance of blemishes. Because of this, it is often added to many commercial anti-aging skin care products.
